October 2nd is a special day on the MAE WEST calendar of good-looking men.
• • On 2 October 1985, Rock Hudson died of AIDS.
• • In 1958, the tall, dark, and handsome actor sang a memorable duet with Mae West — — "Baby, It's Cold Outside" — — during an Academy Awards Show that was televised. This was a rare invitation extended to Mae to perform during the annual Hollywood ceremony for the Oscars. As they concluded the number, Rock offered Mae a cigarette, noting that it was "king-sized" — — and Mae replied, "Mmmm, it's not the men in your life, it's the life in your men!" They ended with a long, slow, passionate kiss. The rehearsal, featuring a solemn looking Mae West, was photographed for Life Magazine.
• • On 2 October 1928 • •
• • "Mae West Defies Cops" read the cover of the Evening Graphic on 2 October 1928.
• • High powered attorney Nathan Burkan was at Mae West's side, trying to get an injunction to keep her play "Pleasure Man" open at the Biltmore Theatre for its second showing on 2 October 1928. Here is Mae West, photographed after a court appearance in downtown Manhattan. Some cast members (i.e., the three tall men) are on the right side. The shorter man on the left is Mr. Burkan. The play, which dealt with homosexuals and drag queens, remained shuttered by the police.
• • On 2 October 1890 • •
• • Born in New York City on this date was Julius Henry "Groucho" Marx [2 October 1890 — 19 August 1977]. The Jewish comedian and film star earned his reputation as a master of wit. His rapid-fire delivery of innuendo-laden patter earned him many admirers, not to mention his own TV quiz show. He made 13 feature films with his siblings the Marx Brothers. In 1926, Groucho appeared at a fundraiser at the Polo Grounds; Mae West performed at the same event.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said: “I'll try anything once, twice if I like it — — three times to make sure.”
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • An article about a new legal thriller mentioned Mae West in the first sentence.
• • Reviewer Richard Lipez writes: To paraphrase an old Mae West tune we don’t hear enough anymore, I like a mystery writer who takes his time. Though Kingsley Amis once insisted that he wanted to read only books that began “A shot rang out!,” the renowned literary Brit might have made an exception for Gianrico Carofiglio. . . .

• • The Mae West Blog was started seven years ago in July 2004. You are reading the 2071st blog post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.
