MAE WEST had nothing against streetwalkers and even portrayed a prostitute (or kept woman) onstage and onscreen. Did she have any pet Parisian "maisons closes" where she would occasionally pop in? No.
• • Alas, a good deal of head-shaking occurs when reporters scribble inaccurate statements — — and fact-checkers let it all slide into muck that will be copied and quoted. At fault this week is AFP stringer Claire Rosemberg, who offered this preposterous disinformation about a former French bordello: "The brothels combined the lure of private pleasures with chic bars and restaurants for party-goers, attracting stars such as Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, Mae West, and Marlene Dietrich — — whose favourite was the One Two Two, named after its address at 122 rue de Provence." [Source for this ERROR: 'Archaeologist of erotica' revives world of brothels; BY: Claire Rosemberg; printed on Wednesday 4 November 2009; published by AFP.] Agence France-Presse (AFP) is a French news agency based in Paris.
• • Since Mae West was never in France, it is absurd to claim she "visited" their red-light district or adopted a "favorite" brothel in Paris.
• • What other laughable misinformation have you encountered recently about a deceased Hollywood star? And where are the fact-checkers?
