MAE WEST memorabilia located in The Garden State might soon be turning a profit for the state coffers if there are absent-minded owners.
• • The Star-Ledger noted New Jersey's cash-hungry state treasury has managed to turn forgetfulness into an asset. According to reporter Joe Donahue, "The Corzine administration expects to raise about $178 million during the budget year that begins July 1 by selling off abandoned personal assets after waiting periods expire."
• • However, Donahue assured his readers, state officials go to considerable lengths to reunite owners or their heirs with their lost items — — which can include everything from old bank accounts to false teeth, or even memorabilia like autographs of Mae West and George S. Patton.
• • If the state auctions off property, it must provide fair reimbursement to rightful owners if they come forth — — even if it is decades later.
• • Already this year, the Division of Taxation's Unclaimed Property Office has returned $61 million to about 26,000 claimants, treasurer David Rousseau announced yesterday. The aim, he said, is to top the record $84 million handed back last year.
• • "We're looking to break that record ... and encourage the public to see if they have a claim on any property being held for safekeeping," he said.
• • State officials regularly publish a list of property being added to its stockpile, and the names of owners. . . .
