Brooklyn native Arthur Vinton [10 December 1889 — 26 February 1963] co-starred with MAE WEST in "The Constant Sinner" [September — November 1931] at the Royale Theatre.
• • Live theatre and radio shows offered the tall handsome leading man on-going opportunities. He was cast in several Broadway productions between 1931 — 1950. "Arms and the Girl" seems to have been his last appearance in the legitimate. His height and commanding voice brought him roles as military leaders, i.e., General George Washington, General Von Bruck, Colonel Geza, and Captain Knebel.
• • Though he was cast in dozens of motion pictures (largely from 1931 — 1935), it seems that Hollywood never regarded the six-foot-one actor as much more than a bit player.
• • In between his roles as a voice actor — — for the popular radio serial "The Shadow" and CBS shows like "The Plot To Overthrow Christmas" [1942] — — the "weekend farmer" relaxed by raising turkeys at his country home in Little Britain, New York not far from Newburgh.
• • He died in Guadalajara, Mexico in February — — on 26 February 1963 — — at 73 years old.

Mae West.
Arthur Vinton was far from being a batchelor. He had a daughter by his first wife. He remarried Marie Eugenia Vinton, and they are buried together in Mexico. He was estranged from his duughter because she married an afro-American. He never had any children by his second wife. I know this because he was my grandmother's second husband. Both Marie and Arthur were married before 1930 because it was in the early 30s that my parents met in Hollywood when Arthur and Clay Clement (my other grandfather) used to play cards. Both men were founding members of the screen actors guild.
ReplyDeleteThis is an amazing, random find, and I hope everyone doesn't think I'm crazy but the "Afro-American" that his daughter married was Clinton White. Clinton White had a son by Evelyn Vinton, named Roger White and he had two children, myself and my brother.
ReplyDeleteArthur Vinton was my great-grandfather so we are related! I have many photos of him to share if you would like some time to connect via email?

There is an advertising booklet which contains a history of the turkey farm that he started. There are also a couple of pictures of him in the brochure and there are also pictures of the farm available separately.
