MAE WEST's life is a tale of two cities: New York City and Los Angeles. • • Selfridges, the high-end department store in London's West End, has a number for you Mae collectors out there. The British emporium decided that a first edition of Mae West's autobiography, Goodness Had Nothing to Do With It, is justiably worth £600 [or $1,300)].
• • And speaking of rare books by pneumatic blondes, it is now possible, at Selfridge's Wonder Room, to buy a copy of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar (an edition written under Plath's pen name Victoria Lucas and displayed on a shelf under a bell jar).
• • Call ahead to make sure these books are still available before you head off to Oxford Street. If you misplaced your phone, and feel that a jeweled cellphone is more your image, then Selfridges has a model in stock for £53,000 [or $113,000].
• • In case your inner Zen Buddist is about to protest, consider this. Alannah Weston, Selfridges' creative director, opines that shopping is not really about acquiring material objects that will have to be dusted. Au contraire.
