An uninhibited bathroom encounter with MAE WEST in 1929 stayed in the mind of Russell Gursky, a former telegram boy from Chicago, Illinois who is now in his nineties.
• • The Tucson Citizen recently saluted this 93-year-old retiree. For the past 20 years, Russell Gursky has gone to work at the Tucson Police Department. A dedicated volunteer, Gursky uses the latest technology and provides recorded copies of archived 911 calls for court cases; he also inputs data about cases of sexual assault and DUIs into the computer system and, when subpoenaed, appears in court to testify about his work.
• • Before moving to Arizona, Gursky had been employed as an industrial engineer.
• • Born in Chicago in 1913, he took a job with Western Union delivering telegrams, a job he was too young for at 15, but he secured because "I passed for 17," he said.
• • During his time with Western Union he delivered telegrams to MAE WEST and other notables such as Al Capone.
• • Gursky recalled that the Windy City's gum mogul William Wrigley Jr. rewarded him by giving him $5 to buy himself a pair of gloves.
He explained that Mae West was sitting in a bath when he hand-delivered her telegram.
"And I had to wait for her to respond," Gursky said. . . .
